Undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Kulbardi
Bachelor of Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies)
Australian Indigenous Studies (AIS) is a dynamic and exciting field of enquiry. This degree explores a range of contemporary issues affecting Australian Indigenous peoples' life experiences and aspirations. It provides students with opportunities to engage with the resilient nature of Australian Indigenous cultures and contemporary forms of Indigenous cultural expression, including song, dance, story, art, film and theatre. A range of interdisciplinary conceptual tools is utilized, including critical race theory and emerging Indigenous critical theory, to further the project of decolonizing knowledges on and about Indigenous peoples. Students also examine personal and national identity, and the relationship between these and Aboriginality.
Australian Indigenous Studies is open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.
Students can study Australian Indigenous Studies as a major (Bachelor of Arts (AIS)) or as a minor.
Bachelor of Education (Primary)/Bachelor of Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies)
Kulbardi is proud to co-offer (with the School of Education) Western Australia's only joint degree in Primary Education and AIS. This 96-point degree offers intending teachers the chance to include a full major in AIS as part of their preparation for teaching in the Primary School system.
Uniquely, the joint degree extends students' knowledge and skills beyond cultural awareness to the point that graduates are confident in their ability to act as sophisticated and critical agents of social change in their work as primary educators.
Indigenous Sustainability (Minor)
The Indigenous Sustainability minor minor is offered as part of the broader University commitment to develop a suite of sustainability offerings across its disciplines. The growing awareness of the links between issues of sustainability in general and Indigenous interests and concerns is also a major reason for interest in this course of study.
Honours in Australian Indigenous Studies (BA (Hons))
The aim of Honours is to extend the student's grasp of the principles and practice of their subject and to develop ability for independent research.
A PhD in Australian Indigenous Studies
An Honours qualification of 2A is normally required for admission to higher research degree study. Find out more about a PhD in Australian Indigenous Studies.
