What is Kulbardi Wangkiny?

The Kulbardi Wangkiny pre-media program is an intensive course designed to prepare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students for first year Media Studies. The program is ultimately designed to assess the suitability of applicants wishing to study in the School of Media, Communication and Culture. Applicants will develop strategies and techniques to handle the pressures and routines of Media, Communication or Cultural Studies. The program offers an intensive pre-media education as well as orientation to university study.

Kulbardi Wangkiny has a focus on small group workshops and tutorials with experienced staff from Murdoch University and distinguished guests conducting lectures. The program will also place an emphasis on production skills - including individual and group projects.

Why Kulbardi offers the pre-media course

Media has a particular importance for Indigenous people. Radio, film, television and newspapers are vehicles for telling their stories, but more importantly they offer opportunities, through employment for Indigenous people, to tell their stories themselves. The Kulbardi Aboriginal centre and the Murdoch University School of Media, Communications and Culture have created a pre-media program that gives Indigenous people an alternative pathway into university study in the field of media.
